Kannur Tourism-Tourist places and Beaches in Kannur (Cannanore)

Kannur is a city in northern Kerala.Kannur district derived its name from the location of its headquarters at Kannur town.
Kannur, was for many centuries the capital of the Kolathiri Rajas, the rivals of the Zamorins of Kozhikode.
The old name 'Cannanore' is the anglicized form of the Malayalam word Kannur.Kannur is now a city known for its handloom and beedi industries.

Tellicherry Fort (Thalassery Fort)
This fort is located around 22 km from Kannur and is perched on a rocky hill on the Thalasseri beach itself. Thalasseri is a major town in Kannur district.The Tellicherry fort was built in the year 1708 by Lord Wellesley and mainly served as military purposes.

Gundert's Bungalow
Situated 20 km from Kannur, near Thalasseri town, on the National Highway at Illikunnu hill is the Gundert Bungalow. This bungalow is the erstwhile residence of the famous German scholar, Dr. Herman Gundert.

Moppila Bay
Moppila Bay is a natural fishing harbour, lying near Fort St. Angelos. A sea wall projecting from the fort separates the rough sea and inland water

Trichambaram Temple
Trichambaram Krishna Temple is a 11th century shrine situated at Trichambaram on the National Highway, around 20 km from Kannur.This is a temple considered holy by the Vaishnava cult. Lord Krishna is the presiding deity of this templ.Famous for 14 day annual festival of Trichambaram utsavam.

Aralam Wild life sanctuary
Aralam Wild life sanctuary is at a distance of 35 km from Thalessery /22 km from Kunnur and is home to tropical and semi evergreen forests.

Pazhazzi Dam
The dam is located at a distance of 37 km from Kunnur and has a garden and an Amusement Park.Also famous for Buddha's mountain at Pazhassi, sculpture of Pazhassi King.

Shiva Temples, Kottiyoor
Two ancient Shiva temples, Akkare Kottiyoor and Ikkare Kottiyoor are located in the dense forests on the opposite shores of River Bavali.These Shiva Temples that attracts a number of devotees from all over. The 27 day annual festival (Kottiyoor Utsavam) sees a lot more people pouring in to offer their prayer to Lord Shiva.

Pythal Mala
Pythal Mala is the scenic cliff at Sreekandapuram, around 65km from Kannur Town.This beautiful hill station is located at a height of 4500 feet above the sea level near the Kerala - Karnataka border. Distance from Kannur town is 65 km.

Ezhimala
Ezhimala, believed to have been visited by Lord Buddha, was one of the major battle fields of the Chola-Chera war in the 11th century. There is a Naval Academy here.The Ezhimala hills, renowned for rare medicinal herbs with mythological significance, is around 55 km from Kannur. Bordered by the sea on three sides, it is located at an altitude of 286m above sea level.

Fort St Angelo
This Fort is the prime attraction of the Kannur town and is located around 3 km west of it. It was originally built by Don Francisco De Almeida (a Portuguese Admiral). However, the Dutch took away the fort from the Portuguese in the 17th century and sold it to Ali Raja of Kannur.

Dharmadam Island
Dharmadam Island is a main picnic spot situated 17 kms from Kannur, located in the Arabian sea at a distance of 100 meters from the shore. Sprawling over an area of 5 acres and surrounded by rivers and beaches, this beautiful island is covered with tall coconut palms and dense bushes.

Arakkal Kettu
This was the residence of the only Muslim Royal family of Kerala, the Arakkal. Some recent construction works have been done on this palace. The descendants of the Raja still reside in an area closeby.This 200-year-old palace complex has been renovated and converted into a heritage museum in the year 2005.

Payyambalam Beach

This is one of the beautiful beach in north Kerala.

Sri Muthappan Temple, Parassinikadavu
Parassinikadavu temple or Sri Muthappan temple is situated around 18 km north of Kannur town and is on the banks of Valapattanam river and is dedicated to a hunter form of Lord Vishnu, Shri Muthappan. Women need to dress up in a saree and men in mundu to visit this temple.
Parassinikadavu situated about 16 Kms from Kannur, is famous for the Snake Park and the Sri Muthappan temple, the only place where the ritualistic dance 'Theyyam' is performed all around the year.
The Snake park is open from 8.30 am to 5 pm.

Valapattanam Backwater
The Azhikkal port and Azhikkal Beach are located very near Valapattanam. The small town of Valapattanam, also known as Baliapattom, is located 7 km away from Kannur and is on the banks of Valapattanam river.

Muzhapilangad Beach
This beach lies at a distance of 15 km from Kannur and 8 km from the Thalasseri and boasts of being one of the longest drive-in beaches in Kerala.This beach happens to be the only drive in beach of India

By Air
Nearest airport is the Kozhikode Airport (Calicut airport), which is located at a distance of 93 kilometers from Kannur to the south.

By Rail/ Train

Kannur has its own railway station and is an important junction in Kerala. It is well connected by rail to Kerala and other nearby states.

By Road
Kannur is well linked by a wide network of roads including NH 17 ,and can be reached from anywhere in Kerala.

Tourist places in Kasargod (Kasaragod)

Kasaragod has many places which has immense potential as tourist destinations. The Bekal fort, which is of great historical and archaeological interest, is the largest and best preserved of its kind in the district and in the Kerala state.The district has many other famous tourist centres apart from the internationaly famous Bekal fort & beach.There are also places which can be converted to attract the tourists.The main tourist places in Kasargod are given below.

2.Kottencheri Hills
Kottencheri hills is near Konnakkady in Hosdurg taluk. These mountains are full of dense forests, meadows and medicinal plants.This rain forest is near Konnakkad 30 KM north- east of Kanhangad. Beautiful picnic centre and ideal for trekking. Thalakkaveri in the Brahmagiri mountain of Coorg is near this hills.Kottancheri Hills is a part of the Western Ghats in Kasaragod District.

3.Ranipuram (Madathumala)
Ranipuram is 80 kms away from Kasargod which is 48 kms east of Kanhangad.The place resembles Ooty and is an ideal place for trekking.Two Tourist cottages are available at ranipuram and can accomodate ten to 15 persons.
4.Adoor
45 KMs east of Kasargod town. Adoor is famous for the ancient Siva temple believed to have been founded by Arjuna.
5.Nileshwaram
This is the cultural centre of this district.Nileshwar was once, the seat of Nileshwar Rajas, who are the patrons of art and culture for centuries. Nileshwaram Palace today functions as the folklore centre of the Archeological Department of the state. In and around there are several Kavus where nature, God and man commune serene silence. Major among them is Mannan purathu Kavu, where the grand finale of the annual temple festival of the region takes place.
6.Kottencheri Hills
Kottencheri Hills is near Konnakkady in Hosdurg taluk.30 kms north east of Kanhangad, Kottancherry, which is a forest area and is ideal for trekking.Thalakkaveri in the Brahmagiri mountain of Coorg is near this hills.Thalakkaveri is a renowned pilgrim center and is near the Karnatak border.
7.Valiyaparamba Backwaters
30 kms from Bekal, is a beautiful backwater stretch in Kerala. Valiyaparamba is 5 KMs south west of Cheruvathur separated from the mainland by back waters. One of the main tourist spots of the District. This is an island in the Arabian Sea.
8.Pallikere Beach
Pallikere Beach is situated 1 km from Bekal Fort, this enchanting beach offers a spectacular view of the Bakel fort.
9.Kappil Beach
Kappil Beach is situated 6 kms from Bekal fort.The Kodi Cliff nearby offers a panoramic view of the Arabian Sea.
10.Verramala
Verramala hills have the ruin of a Dutch fort, built in the 18th century.Veeramala Hills is a small mountain in the Kasargode district. Verramala situated near Cheruvathur.
11.Chandragiri fort
Chandragiri lies three kms. south of Kasargod town. Chandragiri fort is said to have been built in the 17th century by Sivappa Nayak of Bednore, who established his authority over the area and built a chain of forts. The Chandragiri river, on the bank of which it rises, marked the traditional boundary between Kerala and the Tuluva Kingdom.
12.Anandashram & Nityanandasramam
These are the two notable asramams in Kasargod district.
Anandashramam, situated about five kms. east of the Kanhangad Railway Station, was founded in 1939 by Swami Ramadas.The Nityanandasramam, which is situated on the hillock about half a km. south of the Hosdurg taluk office, was founded by Swami Nityananda.

Bakel,Bekal Fort,Kasargod-Kasaragod Tourist Places

Bakel the magnificent and robust fort, which overlooks the calm seas and the snow white beach is twenty six kms South of Kasargod town, the northern most Kerala town.
1992 the Government of India declared Bekal Fort as a special tourism area.Bakel fort and the adjoining beach selected by the central government to develop into a special tourism area for the promotion of tourism.
With the intention of transforming Bekal Fort into international tourism centre that in the year 1995 the government formed Bekal Resorts Development Corporation (BRDC).The Bekal fort is now under the Archeological Department of the Government of India.
This imposing circular structure of laterite, rising 130 feet above sea level, stands on a 35-acre headland that runs into the Arabian Sea.
Chemmanad, Udma, Pallikkara and Ajanur Panchayats will come under the Bekal tourism project. Corporation has decided to acquire 278 hectares of land for Bekal tourism development.
According to the South Canara Manual, Bekaln fort fell into the hands of Haider Ali in 1763. After the overthrow of Tipu Sultan in 1799, Bekal was incorporated into the dominions of the English East India Company. The erstwhile Kasaragod taluk of South Canara district was known as Bekal for more than half a century.
Built by the Ikkeri Naikkanas in the 17th century the fort has seen many a war and siege for dominance.The Bekal Fort is the largest fort in Kerala that is located on a hilltop, giving a scenic view of the picturesque countryside. The natural scenery at Bekal is alluring and makes a visit to the place an exhilarating experience.
According to BRDC six beach hotel resorts will be established in the project area on priority in the project area on priority basis. For each resort 30 acres of land will be provided. Of the six resorts two will be started in government sector.

The nearest airport is at Mangalore, 50 km away.
Calicut (Kozhikode) 200 km.
Cochin Airport is 420 km south.

By Train

Kottikulam and Pallikere have railway stations, only the short distance passenger trains from Kasargod and Kannur stop here.

By Road

Motor roads and National Highways connect Kasargod to towns in neighbouring Karnataka and towns in Kerala.

IMHANS Kuthiravattom, Kozhikode to get Centre of Excellence in Mental Health status

The India government has decided to elevate The Institute for Mental Health and Neuro Sciences (IMHANS) Kuthiravattom Kozhikode, to the status of Centre for Excellence.
The project envisages commencement of four additional seats in MD Psychiatry, 8 M.Phil Clinical Psychology and 8 seats in M. Phil Social Worker courses in the Institute at the Government Medical College campus Kozhikode.
The IMHANS has had a long story of neglect and lack of facilities.Considering the number of patients seeks admission there the current facilities is not sufficient.
